Welcome to the official MID CITY JAZZ FESTIVAL webpage!
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!
Created and hosted by Dr. Charles Brooks in 2016, the MCJF is open to all Louisiana middle school, high school, and independent music school jazz ensembles. The festival was created to bring together Louisiana's young musicians and offer them the unique opportunity to perform in front of professional jazz musicians and collegiate-level educators in a friendly yet competitive environment. Quite simply, the Mid City Jazz Festival's goal is to present Louisiana's budding musicians with the opportunity to be a part of a future focused on the preservation of Louisiana's jazz music, education, and heritage.
The 3rd Annual Mid City Jazz Festival will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Baton Rouge Community College, as part of their 10th Annual Arts Festival. Events will take place on the main stage of the Magnolia Theater on BRCC's main campus in Baton Rouge. Ensembles will perform throughout the day in front of a panel of judges consisting of professional jazz musicians, industry notables, and college-level educators. Judges for the 2018 MCJF will include Yamaha Performing Artist and world-renowned Jazz Trumpeter Mr. Rex Richardson, Louisiana State University's Virginia Martin Howard Professor of Piano and Professor of Jazz Studies Dr. Willis Delony, and Baton Rouge Arts Ambassador and local celebrity sousaphonist/upright bassist Mr. Michael Foster of the Michael Foster Project. Ensembles will receive verbal and written feedback and guidance, as well as a guided tour of Dr. Brooks's industry-level recording studio and audio engineering program. Awards will be presented in the evening at 7:00 p.m. with the ceremony featuring performances by winning ensembles and the day’s top soloist. The top soloist will receive the opportunity to perform with Festival Host Dr. Charles Brooks and the festival judges -- a performance that is followed by a very special Judges Concert, featuring Dr. Brooks on drum set and four-mallet jazz vibraphone, Dr. Willis Delony on jazz piano, Mr. Rex Richardson on jazz trumpet, and Mr. Michael Foster on upright bass (hop over to our /judges page to read more about each artist). This concert is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, so festival participants are encouraged to return with family and friends for the awards ceremony and judges concert.
